Special News Release Memo from Dr. Alan Upshall, President, The Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association:

Paraphrasing the memo--Traditionally the annual gathering of the North American Welsh has been known as the Gymanfa Ganu or the National Gymanfa Ganu. However, the event that takes place now is very different in content and style from the first event more than seventy years ago. The issue of the title of the weekend, Gymanfa Ganu, does not adequately describe the four-day event which celebrates many of the aspects of Welsh culture and heritage. The first Gymanfa Ganu was a specific event, taking place on a Sunday afternoon or evening, strictly emphasizing a session of hymn singing. The connotation of The National is not accurate since we have an International gathering of the people of North America. It was, therefore, agreed by the WNGGA Board of Trustees to change the name of the gathering from Annual Gymanfa Ganu to THE NORTH AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF WALES. The title will formally be introduced for the first time in Richmond, Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003. Of course, local communities can still use the traditional term Gymanfa Ganu.

Wrexham International Science Festival-Promoting science in Wales:

The festival aims to increase the public understanding of science and to encourage more young people to look at the range of science-based study and careers that the Welsh economy needs to take on the challenges of the twenty-first century. The next Wrexham Science Festival is scheduled March 18-24, 2002. Details can be found on the website www.wrexhamsf.com

Mr. Frank Stagg from Toledo, Ohio passed away on August 16, 2001. He was the only member of the Welsh Society that had been born in Wales. He came to America when he was sixteen years old and visited Wales many times. He has one sister still living there. Sincerely, Helen Stagg 4344 Willis Blvd., Toledo, Ohio 43623
