Member's Deaths:

       Orman Lavelle Renner, 84 years old, and his sister, Helen Renner Lewis, 81 years old, passed away in January and August 2003.  Orman was married to Margaret Jane Lewis Renner, died in 1993, and Margaret Lloyd Renner who presently resides in Gomer.  Helen was married to Richard Elvin Lewis, died in 1996.  Thank you for the contributions to the Gomer Welsh Community Museum in memory of these Welsh Society members and Gomer natives.

       Mark your calendars for the following events:

v    Thursday, September 11, 2003-5:00 PM.   Museum Work Night: Things that need to be done that evening: chainsaw some tree limbs, pull weeds, wash front porch, take down laundry poles, break-up stone slab, plant some perennials etc.  We are taking bids on the shed repair and siding.  If anyone knows of a good cheap contractor, let us know!  Fill dirt for the backyard is also being arranged.

v     Thursday, September 25, 2003- 6:30 PM.  The Welsh Society of Northwest Ohio Meeting.  Please bring a dessert.  Beverages will be furnished.

v     Saturday, October 25, 2003- 8:00-11:30 AM.  The annual Welsh Breakfast/Flu Shots.  The event will be held in the Gomer United Church of Christ fellowship hall.  The Delphos Visiting Nurses will be available for flu shots.  Tickets may be obtained from any Welsh Society member, Gomer Church office or at the door on October 25.

         Scholarships Awarded:

The two $500.00 scholarships will be awarded to Megan Thomas and Sarah Sunderland this year.

Megan is the daughter of Rebecca (Lloyd) Thomas and the late Rev. Willard Thomas.  Rebecca is a member of our Welsh Society.  Megan is a graduate of Columbus Grove High School.  Megan ranked first in her class of 74 with a 4.0 average.  She is a leader in her many, many activities showing great interest in music and theater.  A sampling of her activities, other than music, include French Club, library aide, cheerleading mascot, volunteen of the year at Lima Memorial Hospital, all ÒAÓ Honor roll, outstanding chemistry student, top anatomy student and Ohio Test of Scholastic Achievement.  Megan will be attending the University of Dayton studying psychology.

This is the second year for Sarah to receive our scholarship.  She is the daughter of Carol Sunderland of Gomer and Martin Sunderland, Lima, and the granddaughter of Robert and Margey Alger who are charter members of WSNO.  Sarah is a graduate of Elida High School.  Last year she attended Capital University, Columbus.  She is enjoying working at Wal Mart this summer.  This year, she will be attending The Ohio State University, Columbus taking business-marketing.

Volunteers Needed:

v     We need more volunteers from the Welsh Society membership to be at the museum from 1:30-4:00 PM on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.  Please stop at the museum on a Sunday when it is open or telephone Alice Bushong (419) 331-3651 to sign up.  Thank you.

v     Christmas Tour of Homes: We have only one confirmed home and need two more volunteers for this project this year.  Please contact Linda Whittington (419) 642-5911, jdw_ljw@yahoo.com by September 24, 2003 if you or someone you know would be willing to participate.  Thank you.

Successful Events:

v     Thank you to those individuals who participated in the 'Grange' bake sale and antique farm machinery display in June.  The fundraiser was very successful for the museum.

v     Sports Day Memories: The day started with Dave Whittington on the WIMA Mr. Wheels Show.  He discussed many aspects of Admiral Byrd's snowcruiser and stressed that Gomer has the only cruiser replica along with pictures and news articles displayed in the Gomer Welsh Community Museum.  Contact Carla Olds (419) 999-5820 if you would like to purchase a 3 pack (3 hour) set of CDs or cassettes of the WIMA Sports Talk with Koza Show.  There are only 18 sets available at $10.00 per set.
