MUSEUM UPDATE:

From the five ÒdirectorsÓ: Carla Olds, Kay Studer, Alice Bushong, Tom Evans and Dave Whittington.

$4,000 is left in the building fund, out of approximately $20,000 in donated monies.  The exterior and interior are about 80% completed. Our goal is exactly one year from the start date, May 2002, to begin designing and filling rooms.

Completed as of this date: initial cleaning of insides, new roof, new spouting, new furnace, repaired siding, wheelchair ramp and sidewalk, new back door, new electrical wiring, new porch, ceilings-texture painted, two front rooms finished, SW room dry-walled and painted, middle room- repaired and painted, upstairs office room finished, three lights (2- 19th century) donated and installed, kitchen gutted to studs, ½ of back shed removed, some mulch and daffodils planted, two display cases purchased (need repair), a donated stained glass window above front door, yard rocks/stones removed and insulation placed in walls/attic.

All labor has been donated, saving thousands of dollars.  Special ÒThanksÓ to general contractors, Glen Sandy and Jack Centers!  Others include:  Bob Alger, Elwood and Marty Thomas, Larry Stewart, Bob Roethlisberger, Art Holman and Don Malone (Carter Lumber Co., VanWert, OH).  There are others who have helped drywall, helped remove materials etc.  Thank You.

ONGOING PROJECTS: Dry-wall the kitchen, finish carpentry in SW room and kitchen, repair middle room and kitchen floors/thresholds, landscape, fix display cases, re-side and repair shed and begin the donation process of items/furniture.  Further details upcoming in newsletters.

Our donations (private and community) are well-below what is necessary!  We will need probably $10-15,000 more to complete projects and maintain the museum on a monthly basis (heat, electricity, telephone, computer service etc.).  If you know of a company, business or private individual who is willing to donate, please contact Carla Olds, 3048 Inwood Dr., Lima, Ohio  45806  (419) 999-5820.  Every $100-$500 will help!  We cannot stop this great undertaking now.  Members, who canÕt donate labor etc., please make some calls to friends/ businesses.  Thanks.

¯     The Christmas Sing and Tea and the Tour of Homes were a great success.  Thank you to everyone that participated.   Over $1,000 was cleared and will be applied to scholarships for students of Welsh heritage in this area.  Also, thank you to Fara Ewing for donating to the museum over $200 for her ceramic, Welsh dragon Christmas ornaments.

¯     As a reminder, we have received monies for the museum from three grants: Midwest Electric-$500, American Electric Power-$100-submitted by Elwood Thomas (former employee), and the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu-$2000 (To be used to purchase a computer).  If you have any other grant suggestions, please contact Alice Ruth Bushong at (419) 331-3651.

¯     Welsh ÔRabbitÕ (also called ÔRarebitÕ)

The story is told that poor Welshmen were so poor that when they served ÒrabbitÓ, it was really only a piece of toast with cheese sauce poured over it.  Someone once pointed out that this was certainly not rabbit, but it sure was a Òrare bitÓ! Hence, the names: is it ÔWelsh RabbitÕ or ÒWelsh RarebitÕ?  We think a poor Welsh woman, rushed for time that day, forgot the rabbit!

½ cup butter

½ cup flour

4 cups milk

1 Tblsp. Yellow mustard

10 oz. Pkg. Sharp cheddar cheese, shredded or in small chunks

Paprika

Heat milk in microwave on high for 8-9 minutes.  (This saves a lot of stirring time.)  Meanwhile, melt butter in a medium saucepan on low heat and stir in flour with a whisk along with the mustard.  When milk is ready, whisk into flour-butter mixture, stirring until it comes to a boil on medium-high heat.  Reduce heat to low and stir in cheese until melted.  Serve over toast, allowing 2 slices per person, and sprinkle with paprika.  You can also have fun by using a cookie cutter for different shapes and putting them on top of the cheese instead of under.  This has been a long time favorite of the Welsh and is great for either lunch or supper.  Any leftover sauce is also great served over broccoli or cauliflower.  Serves 6-7.
